Louise of Savoy

Louise of Savoy
(1476-1531)
   queen of France
Born in Pont-d'Ain, Louise of Savoy was the daughter of Philippe, duke of Savoy, and Marguerite of Bourbon. In 1488, she married Charles of Valois, duke of Angoulême, with whom she had two children: marguerite de valois and King Francis i. The latter made her regent during his campaign in Italy in 1515 and after Pavia (1525). Beautiful, intelligent, but also ambitious and scheming, she had a sense of politics and kept order after Pavia and in negotiating a peace treaty (paix des Dames, 1529) with Marguerite of Austria. At the same time, she played a less than glorious role in the condemnation of jacques de semblançay and in the treason of the constable of Bourbon. Well educated, Louise of Savoy was a patron of various scholars and left her Mémoires.
